| The Costa del Sol is the densely populated coast of Andalucia in Southern Spain which stretches for over 150kms from Almeria in the east to Tarifa in the west. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain with its temperate climate which lasts all year round, fine sandy beaches and warm Mediterranean waters. Many towns including Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Torremolinos have been undergoing some extensive redevelopment and now have impressive esplanades or “paseo maritimos”. There is some lively nightlife to be found on the Costa del Sol with a huge number of clubs, bars and restaurants. Other attractions include zoos like Selwo Park, water parks, go karting, casinos, and amusement parks like Tivoli World as well as some beautifully landscaped public gardens to visit along the coast. The Costa del Sol offers something for everyone: young and old, locals and tourists alike. The coast is often nicknamed "The Costa del Golf” with its high representation of first class championship golf courses. The younger generation usually head for areas like the Puerto Marina popular '24 hour square' of Benalmadena and Marbella's Puerto Banus which do not really get going until midnight and then stay open until dawn. The Costa del Sol’s history dates back to the Phoenicians and has been inhabited by Greeks, Romans and Moors. All of whom have left their mark on the local culture and architecture. The Costa del Sol and the Malaga province are home to some of the best Flamenco shows and bull fights, not to mention the best tapas restaurants. The transport communication links are excellent on the coast, especially with the new Autopista del Sol which gives quick and east access from Malaga to Estepona and beyond to Gibraltar. The old N340 coast road is a little slower but offers some exquisite sea views as it snakes its way along the coast. If you want to explore further inland there are links between the towns of Seville, Granada and Cordoba. The International Airport at Malaga has regular flights to most key cities and is located just 10 minutes from the centre. It is around a 30-40 minute drive from most of the popular resorts on the coast. |
